A Blend of Analog Warmth and Digital Precision

Creating a hi-fi system is an intensely personal experience, combining components that not only deliver great sound but also match your own preferences and listening habits. Over time, I’ve assembled a setup that balances the rich, immersive sound of vinyl with the convenience and quality of digital audio, all driven by well-regarded components that come together in harmony.

Here’s an overview of the key elements of my hi-fi system, along with insights into why each piece was chosen and how it contributes to the overall sonic experience.

The Turntable: Audio-Technica AT-LP5 with Ortofon 2M Blue Cartridge

My turntable is the Audio-Technica AT-LP5, a direct-drive model that strikes a balance between solid construction and affordability. Its clean, minimalist design allows it to fit seamlessly into any setup, but more importantly, it’s well-regarded for its audio performance. It provides detailed, accurate playback, without the mechanical noise that some lower-end turntables suffer from. Its direct-drive motor ensures consistent speed and stability, which is critical for reproducing the full nuance of vinyl records.

Paired with the Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge, this combination truly shines. The 2M Blue is a moving magnet cartridge that offers clarity and precise sound reproduction. It brings out the detail in records without being overly analytical, making it a great choice for a variety of music genres. The highs are crisp, the mids are natural, and the bass is present without being overpowering.

One of the key characteristics of this pairing is the warmth that only vinyl can deliver. With the Ortofon 2M Blue extracting the detail from each groove, you get a smooth, natural sound that feels immersive without losing any clarity. For those who enjoy vinyl, the tactile experience of lowering the tonearm and hearing that initial crackle is only the beginning… the sound quality is what draws you in and keeps you listening.

The Phono Stage: iFi Zen Phono

To fully unlock the potential of the LP5 and the 2M Blue, the signal needs to be properly amplified and equalised, which is where the iFi Zen Phono stage comes in. This compact, well-built phono preamplifier boosts the weak signal from the turntable to a line-level signal suitable for amplification, while also applying the necessary RIAA equalisation.

iFi is known for producing high-quality, value-for-money components, and the Zen Phono is no exception. It has low noise floor and an ability to retain the dynamics of vinyl playback without introducing unwanted distortion. It adds transparency to the sound, allowing the character of the cartridge and turntable to shine through.

For me, the iFi Zen Phono brings out the richness of vinyl playback, ensuring that the sound remains warm and detailed, even during quieter passages. There’s an undeniable smoothness to the music, and the phono stage plays a crucial role in preserving the integrity of the analog signal as it moves through the system.

The Amplifier: Denon PMA-720AE

At the heart of my system is my trusty and venerable Denon PMA-720AE integrated amplifier, a well-built and versatile amp that’s perfect for driving both analog and digital sources. Denon has a reputation for delivering reliable, no-nonsense amplifiers, and the PMA-720AE is no exception. Its 85 watts per channel offer more than enough power for my needs, driving my speakers with ease and providing a clean, detailed signal at any volume level.

The sound signature of the Denon is neutral, which is exactly what I want in an amplifier. Rather than colouring the sound, it allows the character of each component to come through, whether I’m listening to vinyl or streaming digital music. It offers strong midrange performance and tight bass, both of which contribute to an enjoyable listening experience across various genres of music.

The Speakers: Wharfedale Dovedale

No system is complete without speakers that can truly bring the music to life, and for me, the Wharfedale Dovedale speakers do just that. Wharfedale has a long history in hi-fi audio, and the Dovedales are a modern take on classic British sound. They are known for their warm, full-bodied sound, with rich mids and deep, controlled bass.

This gorgeous pair create a wide soundstage, where instruments and vocals are clearly separated, allowing for a more immersive experience. There’s a richness to the sound that complements the warmth of vinyl playback, but the speakers are equally adept at handling digital music with precision and clarity.

Digital Streaming and Playback: Raspberry Pi 4B with DAC2 HD HAT and Synology DS220+

While vinyl is a big part of my listening experience, digital music plays an equally important role. For this, I use a Raspberry Pi 4B with a DAC2 HD HAT, running Volumio as my music player software. The Pi acts as a versatile and affordable streamer, while the DAC2 HD converts digital signals into high-quality analog audio.

Paired with a Synology DS220+ NAS running Plex Server, I have access to my entire digital music library, which includes high-resolution files. Plexamp allows me to stream music directly from the NAS to my system, controlled via an iPad interface. This setup ensures that I can seamlessly switch between my digital and analog collections, with the Raspberry Pi delivering excellent sound quality at a fraction of the cost of many high-end streamers.

The Headphones: Quad ERA-1

When I want to listen privately, I turn to the Quad ERA-1 planar magnetic headphones. These headphones have a clear, neutral sound signature, with the ability to reveal fine details in recordings. Planar magnetic technology provides faster transient response compared to traditional dynamic drivers, which means more accuracy in reproducing the original sound.

The ERA-1s are comfortable for long listening sessions, and when paired with my iFi Zen DAC v2, they deliver an intimate, precise listening experience. The Zen DAC offers excellent support for high-resolution audio, allowing the Quad headphones to shine with detailed, distortion-free sound.

Conclusion: A Balanced System That Delivers

Each component in my hi-fi setup has been selected aiming to create a cohesive, satisfying listening experience. The Audio-Technica AT-LP5 and Ortofon 2M Blue provide the warmth and depth of analog playback, while the iFi Zen Phono and Denon PMA-720AE ensure that the signal remains clean and powerful as it moves through the system. The Wharfedale Dovedale speakers bring everything to life with a rich, natural sound that works beautifully with both analog and digital sources.

On the digital side, the Raspberry Pi 4B and DAC2 HD HAT, combined with the Synology DS220+ and Plex, provide a flexible and high-quality digital music experience. Whether I’m streaming high-resolution audio or listening to a well-worn vinyl record, this system delivers a balanced, engaging sound that I never tire of.
